How to Install CPU Fans: - Obtain your computer's service or maintenance manual. If you don't have ready access to your computer's service manual, many computer manufacturer's post service manuals for most of their computers from their website for free
- Follow the step-by-step disassembly instructions outlined in your computer's service manual. You need to strip your computer down to the motherboard to gain access to the CPU chip. If you are using a desktop computer, there should be minimal disassembly required. However, gaining access to your laptop's CPU chip is a little trickier. You will have to remove much of your computer's hardware including your hard drive, RAM, modem, wireless card, keyboard and possibly your DVD drive. Additionally, you may have to remove the LCD panel, and completely disassemble your laptop's outer casing
- Locate your CPU cooling fan on your motherboard. Disconnect the cooling fan's power cable from the motherboard, and then remove the Phillips screws securing the cooling fan to the motherboard. Lift the cooling fan out of the motherboard assembly and set it aside. This will reveal the surface of your CPU chip
- Use a clean paper towel, or cloth to apply a thin coat of thermal grease to the surface of your CPU chip. This prevents your CPU from heating up to quickly and frying once you power on your computer
- Place the new cooling fan over the CPU chip. Align the screws on the CPU fan with the screw holes on the CPU chip assembly. Replace the retaining screws, and then attach the cooling fan's power cable to the motherboard
