Bluetooth Mouse Vs. Wireless Mouse: A wireless or Bluetooth mouse is a convenient, wireless solution that cleans up the clutter of having a wire. Although both are useful, wireless and Bluetooth technology each have their strengths and weaknesses. Bluetooth Bluetooth is a short-range, wireless standard developed by Bluetooth SIG, that allows devices to quickly and securely communicate with each other. Bluetooth is mainly for voice (such as cell phone ear pieces) and data (such as wireless mice) applications. Bluetooth can transfer data at a maximum of 3 Mbps (Megabytes per second).
Wireless Mouse The term "wireless" actually covers the whole spectrum of wireless technologies, including wi-fi, bluetooth, etc. However, "wireless mouse" often refers to a mouse that uses radio frequency (RF). A RF transmitter is normally plugged into a computer's USB port and it is paired with the wireless mouse. The mouse can then use the signal to communicate with the computer. RF functions on the 802.11b and 802.11g standard which give speeds of up to 11 Mbps and 54 Mbps, respectively.
Similarities Both bluetooth and wireless mice provide quick connectivity between the transmitter and the device. Additionally, both bluetooth and RF provide fast enough data transfer rates to accomodate a wireless mouse, which does not take up much bandwidth. Both technologies operate in the 2.4Ghz frequency range.
Differences Bluetooth costs less to produce and use. In some computer where Bluetooth is integrated, a Bluetooth mouse can connect without the need to plug in a separate transmitter, freeing up a USB spot. However, RF mice always require a plugged in transmitter. RF mice have a greater range and data transfer rate than Bluetooth, but this is somewhat negated by how much bandwidth the mouse actually needs. RF signals can be disrupted by physical objects (walls), while Bluetooth can transmit through physical objects.
Which One Is Better? The determination of which type of mouse is better is affected by the computer and environment the mice are being used in. However, more and more computers, especially laptops, are integrated with Bluetooth. Additionally, some wireless mice have transmission bases that require electrical power as well, which limits where the mouse can be used. Comparatively a Bluetooth mouse can be used anywhere as long as the computer has integrated Bluetooth or a USB transmitter. Thus, Bluetooth mice are comparatively better to use than wireless mice.
