DIY PC Skins

The days of the big beige box for your computer have long been over, but most PCs still suffer from dull featureless cases. In the world of off-the-shelf PCs, function rules over form, but for the DIY PC enthusiast there's always the option of bringing a bit of uniqueness to a case through skinning.

PC Skinning

• Skinning allows you to place a decal containing any picture you wish onto your PC case. In order to create the skin you'll need a sheet of Inkjet Water Slide Decal Paper, available from most stores that carry inkjet paper supplies, and a color inkjet printer. A color laser printer may do, but inkjets tend to print colors more vividly on the paper and at a lower cost. You'll also need a can of crystal clear acrylic spray paint.
• The inkjet decal paper comes in white and clear versions. Most printers cannot print the color white, so if you're working with a dark colored surface, you should use the white decal paper. The transparent is best used with white PC cases or in instances where you have a transparent background on your image.

Skinning Process

• Choose the image you'd like to place on your PC and print it onto the decal paper. You may want to run the image through a graphics program like Adobe Photoshop in order to remove any background materials for transparent decal use. Once you've printed it onto the paper, use the crystal clear paint to spray at least 3 layers of paint onto the printed design to protect it from damage. Allow the spray to dry between each application.
• After the protective spray has dried, cut the design from the decal paper. If using the white decal paper you'll have to cut the design carefully, removing all unwanted paper outside the design border. The transparent decal doesn't need to be cut quite as closely because your PC will show through anything outside the painted image.
• Place the decal into a bowl of water completely submerging it. Your layers of acrylic spray will protect the image from washing out. Keep the paper submerged for up to a minute. The decal is ready to use when it easily slides around on the paper. Place the sheet containing the decal onto your PC case and slowly slip the backing paper from the decal, keeping the decal as flat as possible during paper removal. The decal can be moved while in place for a short period of time in order to get the picture located precisely where you want it. Use a paper towel or small rubber squeegee to press any remaining air bubbles and water from beneath the decal and allow the decal to dry into place.

Skinning Tips

• Using decals you can create the skin of your choice without limitations. Any picture can be applied or multiple decals can be placed--the final look is up to your vision of what you wish your PC case to look like. If you don't want to bother with printing up your own skins, you can purchase decals from a number of distributors including Amazon.com.
• You can also purchase predesigned vinyl decals or blank vinyl paper for your PC which offers some scratch protection for your PC surface, especially useful with notebook computers. The blank vinyl paper offers an alternative method for applying decals, using a self-adhesive vinyl surface rather than water-based glue, and can be removed easily. The process is the same from print to cut, but the adhesive paper does not require immersion into water, only needing the backing peeled off before application to your surface. Decals come in all sizes from small pictures called tats to full wraparound decals which cover the entire surface of your PC case.
