Size in Detail:
How to Choose Cigar Tubes? Cigars come in a variety of widths and lengths. The width of a cigar is known as the ring gauge. Cigars typically come in ring gauges from 28 to 54. These numbers measure the cross-sectional diameter of the cigar in 1/64th-inch increments. A 32-gauge cigar is 32/64 of an inch across, or 1/2 inch in diameter. Use the ring gauge of your favorite cigar to determine the diameter of the cigar tube you will purchase. Measure the length of your favorite cigar and make sure the tube is at least 1/4 inch longer than the cigar. - Place the cigar flat on a piece of paper. Place a square object on either side of the cigar. Use small boxes or blocks that rests with their edges 90 degrees (perpendicular) to the surface of the paper. Put the second square object on the other side of the cigar.
- Take the cigar away without moving the squares. Mark the inside edges of the squares (that were pressed against the sides of the cigar) without moving the squares. The distance between the marks is the diameter of the cigar.
- Measure the diameter. Use this distance to determine the ring gauge. Most rulers measure down to eighths or 16ths of an inch. Multiply eights by eight to get ring gauge; multiply 16ths by four to get ring gauge. You can also use a calipers to determine the diameter of a cigar.
- Measure the length of the cigar. The nearest quarter inch is sufficient for determining a cigar tube size.
- Choose a cigar tube. Cigar tubes are made of wood, stainless steel, leather, sterling silver and even gold. Make sure the cigar tube will accommodate the ring gauge and length of your cigar. A slightly larger or longer cigar tube is better--you can add cedar veneer to flavor and preserve your cigar.
- Cigar tubes come in single, double and larger sizes. Choose a size that holds the number of cigars you want to carry. Some tubes are made specifically for certain cigar specifications. For example, robusto is 50 gauge and less than five inches long. If you are buying a gift, find out what specification your recipient smokes and buy the right tube
