• These lighters work in the same way as conventional push-button lighters. Electric shock lighters take advantage of a scientific phenomena called the piezoelectric effect. When certain substances such as quartz crystal are struck, bent or otherwise stressed, they emit an electronic pulse. The stronger the shock, the stronger the pulse. Normal piezo lighters use this pulse to light fuel, while electric shock lighters use it to irritate people

• When you push the button in an electric shock or piezo lighter, it compresses a spring, raising a small hammer inside the lighter. When the hammer gets all the way to the top, a latch inside the lighter releases it, letting it spring down against a piece of quartz crystal. Two wires are attached to the quartz crystal. In a piezo lighter, these wires carry a jolt of high-voltage electricity to right in front of the fuel nozzle. The electricity makes a spark, which lights the butane on fire as it comes out of the lighter. How to Refuel a Butane Lighter:

• Turn the flame control screw on the bottom of the lighter with the screwdriver to minimize the flame as much as possible. The direction to turn the screw is usually printed on the bottom of the lighter with two pointed arrows pointing to a minus sign (-) on one side and a plus sign (+) on the other. Turning the screw in the direction of the minus sign should reduce the flame output
• Press the refill inlet valve nipple on the bottom of the lighter down with the screwdriver while holding the lighter upside down to remove air from the butane tank. Air in the butane tank can impede the lighter's ability to create a flame
• Hold the refill inlet valve nipple down until any hissing sounds stop. If you can smell butane gas when holding down the nipple, release it immediately. This means your butane tank already has butane in it. If there is no sound when you hold down the nipple, the tank is already void of both air and butane and you are ready to proceed to the next step
• Press the nozzle of the butane refill can directly into the refill port on the bottom of the lighter firmly while holding the lighter upside down. Continue to hold both in place for about 10 seconds
• Remove the butane refill can from the lighter. Place it in a safe and cool place for storage
• Place the lighter upright on a table or counter top for about 5 minutes to allow the butane to return to room temperature. Butane gets very cold when refilling and is difficult to light when in this state. Your refillable butane lighter now has a replenished supply of butane and is ready to use. Repeat these steps as necessary when the lighter becomes empty again after use
