How Does a Butane Lighter Work?

Operation

  • On the inside of a lighter there is a wick. This gets soaked in butane and is ultimately what sustains the flame when you use your fingers to light it. When you press down the button on the lighter to ignite the flame a small piece of metal is struck against a flint, which creates a spark. At the same time, a small valve is opened which releases gas into the lighter. The spark ignites the wick which ignites the gas which produces the flame. Letting go of the button stops the process completely by cutting off the gas

Refilling

  • The process of refilling a butane lighter is simple. On the bottom of the unit is a hole referred to as the "refill hole." Once you've purchased a can of butane from any gas station or tobacco shop, press the nozzle of the can into the hole. Squeeze the can to release butane into the lighter. The lighter will make a hissing noise as butane is replacing air. When the hissing noise stops, the lighter is full

Blue Flame

  • The flame on a butane lighter needs both oxygen and fuel to ignite. A butane lighter ignites 100% of the gas, which is why the flame burns a blue color. The temperature of the flame tops out at around 1300 degrees. On a regular lighter the butane gas does not completely burn, which is why the flame will be an orange color

Freezing

  • Butane lighters have been historically hard to light when the weather is approaching freezing levels. This is because to ignite, gas has to vaporize inside the lighter. As the temperature gets colder, the boiling point of butane drops, which makes less gas burn up inside the lighter which in turn makes the lighter more difficult to light. You can temporarily fix this, however, by keeping the lighter in your pocket or making a fist around it to warm up the butane

How to Fill a Butane Lighter Correctly?

Ever wonder how to fill your butane lighter? Sometimes even after it seems you have filled it correctly it still doesn't work. It can be hassle, but when done right, can save you a bundle of cash

  • Locate the filter valve. Normally it's on the bottom of your lighter. It will look like a small port with a + and - sign on each side
  • Invert your refill can and press the nozzle lightly into the filter valve. Be careful not to press it in too hard. You should hear a loud hiss as the butane fills the lighter. Some excess fluid may leak out during this process. Don't worry it is perfectly normal
  • Remove refill quickly. It only takes about 3 seconds to fill most size lighters
  • Once full adjust the filter valve turning it left to right with your finger nail. This is a very important step in ensuring your lighter works properly

How to Buy Cigar Lighters:

Finding the right cigar lighter is almost as important as selecting the right cigar for your taste. Lighters can be found online or in any cigar shop, but first several items must be considered, such as lifestyle, frequency of use, and of course how much you're willing to spend

  • Get rid of your cigarette lighter and leave the matches in the drawer-these can ruin a cigar. Because cigars are made with moist tobacco, opposed to the dry tobacco used in cigarettes, it is best to use a lighter made specifically for cigars. They have a broader flame and use clean-burning fuel. The combination of these two factors makes for a better tasting cigar
  • Prioritize your needs. If you are an outdoorsy person and plan on enjoying cigars in the great outdoors, then a windproof cigar lighter is crucial. Adventure lighters are torch lighters that can come equipped with a compass, waterproof case, lanyard and floating devices
  • Choose butane or torch. Butane lighters use a clean burning fuel that won't alter the cigar's taste. They are also wind- and waterproof and provide a precise flame that allows for a more evenly lit cigar. Torch lighters produce a bright blue or green flame with an intensity that can be more easily controlled
  • Decide how much you're willing to spend. A good, wind-resistant lighter with refillable butane costs in the $50-$100 range, while a designer lighter can run you up to $200
