Pirate Outfit Ideas

A pirate costume isn't just perfect for Halloween--it makes an exciting costume for kids and adults year round. You can make your own costume from a combination of homemade items and cheap supplies from a supermarket or party store. Create a scary sword and the right accessories to complete your look. Then you can make all your friends walk the plank

  • Outfit: If you simply want to buy a pirate costume, keep an eye out in the supermarket around Halloween or visit a party store year round for a cheap costume. To save money, make an outfit from the clothes you have at home. A pair of black or brown pants or capris combined with large black boots is all you need for the bottom half of your outfit. Add a long-sleeved, loose white shirt and a brown or black vest with a matching-colored hat to finish it all off. Cheap pirate hats are usually available at toy stores. If you have extra money, add a skull and cross bones iron-on transfer to your shirt, or a sticker to your hat. A large black or brown belt with a thick buckle works well, too, but isn't necessary
  • Sword: No one takes a pirate without a sword seriously. Buy your sword, or make one at home. To buy a sword, visit a costume store or simply go to the toy aisle at the supermarket. Dollar stores and bargain stores often carry plastic swords
  • To make a fake sword, cut a simple sword shape out of cardboard and cover it with aluminum foil. Leave the handle uncovered and use paint to decorate it. Those who are crafty at carving wood might create a wooden sword; an easier method is to take a long, thin dowel rod and drill a hole the diameter of the dowel rod into the center of a small rectangular block of wood. Insert the dowel rod into the wooden block far enough to create a handle on one side and use wood glue in the hole to secure it. The wooden block is the hilt or handle end of the sword, and the long end of the dowel rod is the sword itself. Use spray paint to give it a silver color
  • Accessories: Parrots, eye patches and tattoos add the finishing touches to your pirate costume. Buy stuffed or fake parrots in toy or discount stores, just like your sword. Use safety pins to attach the bird to the shoulder of your shirt. An eye patch is usually available at a costume store or in the toy aisle, but you can make your own by cutting out a circle from black construction paper and using string to tie it around your head. Eye patches can get irritating to wear for a long time, so skip this piece if you can't find a cheap one
  • Add temporary tattoos to your arms or even your ankles and clip fake golden hoop earrings on one or both ears. Girls with pierced ears can wear real hoop earrings or tiny white pearls. Mix and match your accessories to coordinate with the color and style of your outfit

How to Make a Boy's Pirate Costume:

Pirates and piratical behavior fire the imagination. Pirate clothing was not dictated by uniform standards, but rather by the fashion of the time and whatever could be plundered. The heyday of piracy coincides with the revolutionary war, so piratical costumes should be similar to dress in the late 1600's to early 1700's. Although the leaders frequently dressed in finery, the common sailors daily wear was simple - and probably often ragged

  • Create the shirt from a man's over-sized white shirt. Cut away the collar and the top of the lapel and cut off the cuffs. Hem the shirt section where the collar was cut away or fringe it to make it look worn and ragged. Make a wide hem in the sleeve ends, leaving a little space open near the seams. Thread elastic through the hem to create a blousing sleeve
  • Cut the pants off just below the knee and fringe the ends. Add interesting slashes and fake blood stains to enhance the piratical look
  • Cut an eye-patch from felt and sew it to the band of gross-grain ribbon. Tie it around the young pirate's head, letting the felt cover one eye. Tie the bandana over his head, making sure to cover the eye-patch tie
  • Attach the large buckles to the slip-on shoes. The shoes should be worn over violently colored striped socks that reach to the knee
  • Finish off the costume with a wide sash wrapped twice around the young pirate's waist. Blouse out the shirt to give it a tunic appearance. Thrust a toy pistol through the sash on one side and a toy sword through the other

Tips & Warnings:

  • If the young pirate wears an eye-patch to go trick-or-treating, it should be easy to flip up so as to not obscure vision while walking along roads or across streets
  • Some situations will not allow toy weapons. Keep this in mind when planning the costume
