How to Use a POST Diagnostics Card

Ok, so, suppose you have a computer which you just cannot get to start up. Well, chances of it being a hardware related problem are extremely high. We as consumers are very fortunate to have tools to fix or resolve almost any problem we can come across. I am going to explain to you how to use a POST diagnostics card to determine the problem with your PC's hardware components

• Choose the right card: Although not an essential tool, a POST diagnostic card can be of great help to discover and report computer errors are POST (boot.) In order to make sure you are not going to waste your money on a card, I will try and make sure you get the right one. First, you will need to make sure that you have the available slots on your computer to match the card. The card will mainly come in the form of PCI Express x16. Chances are, that if you have bought a new computer withing the past 5-7 years, you will have the available slots given that you have not already occupied them. Some POST diagnostics cards now have the technology to use your high speed USB 2.0. If you cannot locate one, I suggest you look further. • Install the PDC: Next, you are ready to install the card. If you have chosen the USB powered PDC, plug the component in. You will want to make sure the computer is already booted down. If you have purchased a PCI Express x16 compatible PDC start by shutting down the computer. Next you must open the case. If you are unsure how to do this, consult your operating manual, or, consult a friend or relative for help. Once you have the computer open, locate your PCI Express x16 slot. If your card has a piece of aluminum at the end of it, this means you will need to remove the aluminum plate on your computer. This will make it possible for you place the card into the slot and the aluminum piece will line up with the back of the computer. Replace the screw to stabilize the card in place. When you have installed your card, move onto the next step.
• Run: Now you are ready for the money shot. If you are sure that you have installed the card correctly, and all external I/O devices are connected (camera, scanner, printer, MP3 player, etc...) boot on the computer. Soon, you will see a number light up on the screen on the internal card. Take note of this number. Once you have gotten this, consult the documentation that came with your card to negotiate what problem/resolution your number or code matches with in your PCD's documentation.
