How to Change a Water Faucet Valve

  • Changing a water faucet valve is less expensive to do than changing the entire faucet. Over time the valve can become worn and start leaking. Usually the water leak is a result of worn out rubber washers that are on the valve. When replacing the washers does not help, it is time to replace the valve

Instructions:

  • Turn the water off under the sink. There are two valves located on the back wall. Turn both of them clockwise to shut them off. Turn the water handles on to release the pressure in the lines. Plug the sink drain with a stopper to avoid losing any parts down the drain
  • Use a flat tip screw driver to remove the hot or cold decorative cover plate. Slide the tip of the screwdriver under the the edge of the cover plate and pry up. The cover plate will pop off. It is only held on by metal expansion clips. The cover plate is in the center of the handle. You only need to take off the coverplate to the handle where the leak is occurring
  • Use the philips head screwdriver to remove the screw in the center of the handle. Pull up on the handle to remove it. The handle will slide off of the valve
  • Use your pliers to loosen the nut at the base of the exposed valve. Turn the nut counter clockwise. Once the valve is loose enough it can then be removed by hand. Take the valve with you to the building supply store. It is much easier to get the exact valve when you have the old one
  • Insert the new valve into the exact same place on the sink from where you removed the old one. Use your pliers to completely tighten the valve. Place the handle on the stem and insert the screw. Tighten the screw with the philips head screwdriver. Reinsert the decorative cap by pushing down on it. It will pop back in place. Turn the water back on
