How to Use Electric Heater:

  • Electric heaters (commonly called "space heaters") are typically used in areas that are insufficiently heated or as a substitute for high-cost central heating installations. Portable electric heaters are also inexpensive to buy, so maintaining them is considerably easier. These economical advantages make electric heaters a popular choice in many households. There are important safety tips to consider, but first you need to choose the heater that's best for you
  • Step 1: Choose the right heater for your space and heating needs. The capacities of space heaters range from 10,000 Btu to 40,000 Btu per hour. If the area you want to heat is small, you may want to choose one in the low range. Look for a general sizing table in the floor sample manual. Most space heaters work by convection, which means they follow the natural circulation of air in the room to heat it. Some space heaters are radiant, which means they emit heat outward from the source.
  • Step 2: Buy the latest model heater. This will ensure that all safety features are included and current. A quality space heater will have the Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) label attached. Keep in mind that less expensive usually means less efficient
  • Step 3: Arrange the heater appropriately. Knowing where and how to arrange the heater can maximize benefit and keep costs low. If you plan to use a room for a few hours only, it's best to use a radiant heat space heater. That way, it can heat your immediate surroundings and you can avoid a higher bill by not heating the entire room. Always shut off heaters when you leave a room unattended. Some heaters are equipped with a timer and/or a "tip over switch" that will turn the heater off if it falls over
  • Step 4: Plug the heater directly into the wall outlet and use a quality cord

Warnings:

  • Electric heaters are safest when they are kept near the wall where they are plugged in. Only use heavy-duty, three-prong extension cords if you must extend the range of a portable heater
  • Never use a portable electric heater to dry wet clothing or papers
  • Read the owner's manual carefully to understand all the manufacturer's warnings for the specific model you use

How to Maintain Electric Heater:

Things you may need:

  • Soft dust brush
  • Lint-free clothsHousehold utility oil

Steps:

  • Turn off and unplug individual heaters, and allow them to cool to touch. Cooling the outside of the heater allows you to provide basic or thorough maintenance without burning your hands or arms. And unplugging it can help prevent electrical shock. Alternatively, wear long, heat-resistant gloves if you want to start maintenance before the electric heater is completely cooled
  • Move the heater away from the wall and into an open floor space. Check the floor space where the heater was seated to see if any wet or oily spots are present. This could mean a leak exists and a unit that is no longer safe to operate. Thoroughly inspect the outside condition of the heater on all sides. Inspect the bottom of the heater by laying it down on its side on the floor. Look for cracks, rust and peeling paint or enamel
  • Use a soft dust brush or a lint-free cloth, and remove dust from the surfaces. If the heater is a self-contained unit, wipe down the vertical housing with a damp cloth. Remove fan covers on electrical heaters that blow hot air. Wipe down fan blades and brush dust from covers
  • Lubricate the fan using household utility oil such as 3-in-1 oil, or check for manufacturer's recommendations. One drop at the junction where blades are connected to the rotation arm should help to keep the fan running smoothly. If the fan is used in a room with high humidity, such as a bathroom, this operation should be repeated every 3 to 6 months, or if squeaking occurs. Replace the fan cover onto the heater face
  • Return the electric heater to its operational position. Plug it in and turn it on. Check that the gauges and settings are working. Monitor the heating ability to determine a satisfactory condition. Once temperature settings are reached and maintained, the unit should be good for use
