How to Connect the Original XBox Controller to a PC?

• If you have a game controller from the original Xbox video game system, you can modify it to work as a PC game controller. This is a great way to recycle an old Xbox component and to enhance your PC gaming experience for much less than you would pay to buy a new PC game controller with comparable features.

Instructions:

• Chop off the male adapter from the USB cable about five inches from the base of the adapter. Discard the rest of the cable.
• Chop off the Xbox game controller cable right before the adaptor that connects it to the Xbox (i.e., not at the end where it connects to the controller).
• Strip the casing off the exposed ends of both the USB and Xbox controller cables using the wire strippers. Expose about an inch of the inner colored wires in both cables. You will see that the colors of the inner wires match between the two cables.
• Connect each exposed wire in the Xbox cable to its counterpart with the same color in the USB cable. Expose the metal of each wire and twist the metal ends of the two wires around one another at least three times. You can solder the twisted ends for a more secure connection. There will be an unmatched yellow wire in the Xbox cable; ignore it.
• Wrap electrical tape over each exposed connection to insulate it and prevent cross-connections among the wires.
• Connect your modified Xbox controller to your PC by inserting its new USB adapter into a USB port on the PC.
• Download and install the appropriate software drivers to enable your Xbox controller to connect to your PC games.
