How to Connect a Wii Dance Pad:

One popular genre of video games on the Nintendo Wii is dance titles. The enjoyment includes up-tempo songs and fun graphics as well as a chance to utilize a dance pad for games such as Dance Dance Revolution, among others. Connecting the pads, however, has proven to be a mystery for some and has caused plenty of frustrations. No need to worry, however, as the solution is simple.

  • Turn on the console. Press the power button, which is glowing orange in standby mode. Wait for the button to flare to bright green.
  • Insert the disc with the title side facing the top of your Wii. If you have the Wii connected to an upright stand, place the game into the disc slot with the title side facing to the left. When the game appears on the screen, and choose it with the wireless Wii controller.
  • Connect a wired dance pad: Connect the wire from the dance mat to one of the four Gamecube controller slots, located under a panel-style door on the left side of the Wii. If the Wii is in an upright stand, then the controller slots will be on top of the Wii. Note there are two panels with one featuring two long slots and the other with four short slots, which are for Gamecube controllers.
  • Connect a wireless pad: Press the sync buttons on both the mat and the Wii. The button for the mat is located at the front near the battery compartment. The button on the Wii is red and located beneath a panel on the front of the Wii console next to a slot for an SD memory card. Press and hold both buttons and count to ten before releasing.

How to Find a Good Dance Pad for Your Game Console:

Games like Dance Dance Revolution require special dance pads to get you moving. Choosing the right dance pad is important. There are several different types, dozens of manufacturers and lots of options. We'll dance you through them.

  • Decide how much you like the game. When it comes to dance pads, the adage "You get what you pay for" is true. The more money you are willing to spend, the better the dance pad you'll get.
  • Buy a soft pad if you are only casually interested in dancing. Soft pads are the cheapest, but they also wear out quickly under heavy dancing modes. But they'll get you through the trial period while you decide how much you like the dance game.
  • You should be able to find a serviceable soft game pad at any game store or most chain stores that sell electronics (Best Buy, Target, Circuit City and the like).
  • Buy a hard-foam pad if you are dancing for exercise. The foam is thicker and works well for everything but heavy dancing. Hard-foam pads are more expensive than soft pads  but they last longer, are more responsive and don't slide around during play (as soft pads tend to do).
  • Find a hard-foam game pad online or at a dedicated game store. Redoctane (redoctane.com) sells an excellent pad called the Ignition that is widely considered to be the best in hard-foam pads.
  • Buy a metal pad if you plan to dance in tournaments or prefer a heavy model. The metal pads are expensive but are far and away the best in terms of responsiveness, durability and play experience.
  • Find metal pads online or through your local game store. You may have to ask your game store to special-order your metal pads; most game stores only keep soft and hard-foam pads in stock.
