How to Clean a Bicycle Seat Post Tube: - Position the bike so that it is securely held in place in an upright position. Use the kick stand of the bike for support, or in the case of mountain bikes, position the bike in a maintenance stand. Bikes without kick stands may also be supported against a sturdy object and secured with a bungee or stretch cord.
- Loosen the retaining nut on the upright tube of the bike. The seat post tube fits into the upright tube and is held in place by tightening a bolt which clamps the upright tube down on the seat post. Some bikes may feature a quick-release bolt for incremental adjustment or quick removal.
- Examine the seat post tube for excessive wear, rust, or other damage. If the seat post is loose inside the tube, and there is excessive pitting or gouging around the tube, it may be necessary to completely replace the post tube.
- Wipe any rust or debris from the post tube with a cloth. Use a small amount of multipurpose protectant/lubricant to aid in the removal of any rust or corrosion. Avoid using too much lubrication at this point. Also consider using an abrasive cleaning pad to help in the removal of any stubborn or heavier rust spots. Wipe the tube clean with a cloth to remove all rust and apply a thin coating of lubricant.
- Reinstall the seat post by inserting the post tube into the bike upright tube. Adjust the height of the tube to the correct position and securely tighten the bolt or quick release.
How to Remove the Seatpost on a Bike:
Bolt-on Seatpost - Loosen the bolt on the seat collar (also known as a seat clamp) portion of your bicycle frame (at the bottom of the seatpost) using an Allen or hex wrench. The bolt on most seatposts will require either a 4- or 5-millimeter wrench.
- Pull the seatpost up as you loosen the seat collar bolt. There is no need to completely remove the bolt and seat clamp. When the seatpost moves up and down freely, the bolt is loose enough.
- Remove your seatpost. To put it, or a new one, on your bicycle, simply tighten the Allen bolts until the seatpost is secured. Be sure not to over-tighten. Some seatposts are secured with two bolts, one on each side of the seat clamp. This is done to ensure that torque is supplied evenly to each side of the post, which can lessen the chances of failure.
Quick-release Seatpost - Open the lever that is part of the quick-release assembly that secures the seatpost into the seat tube of your bicycle frame by pulling it away from the bike.
- Hold the lever and unscrew the bolt it is attached to slightly, if necessary, to loosen the clamp enough so that your seatpost moves up and down freely.
- Remove your seatpost. To replace it, re-tighten the bolt attached to the quick-release lever and close the lever by pushing it back toward the bike.
