How to Clean a Plush Doll:

  • Clean a plush doll as soon as a spill occurs by shaking the plush doll vigorously to remove as much of the liquid as possible. Use a clean, wet sponge to dab at the plush doll to dilute and remove as much of the stain as possible. Finish with an alcohol wipe after testing it on the bottom of the doll to check for colorfastness. Solid stains can be treated immediately with alcohol wipes; if it is a stubborn stain set it aside for washing
  • Check the label for washing instructions. If hand or machine washing is appropriate, open a seam on the bottom of the doll where it normally sits when placed upright
  • Remove the stuffing through the opened seam and set it aside to re-stuff it later. Take the opportunity to wash several plush toys at one time, keeping the stuffing for each doll separate from the others
  • Place the plush dolls loosely in a pillowcase and tie the pillowcase off at the end. Remove clothing from the doll and hand wash it as gently as possible. Allow it to air-dry
  • Wash the pillowcase filled with plush dolls by itself on the gentle cycle in mild detergent in cold water
  • Dry the filled pillowcase in the clothes dryer by itself on the gentle cycle on the lowest heat setting
  • Replace the stuffing in each doll, taking care to push it in carefully so that it fills the plush doll out evenly. Sew the seam

How to Make Your Own Plush Doll:

  • Draft your plush doll pattern on a sheet of paper, or use a doll pattern that you like. To draft a pattern, draw out a to-scale representation of the doll you want to make. Draw only the overall shape of the limbs, torso and head, positioning the doll as if it is standing, facing you with its limbs outstretched. Lay a sheet of tracing paper over each body part, and copy them separately so that you have a drawing of a leg, arm, torso and head
  • Add seam allowances to your pattern. Draw an outline around each body part, 1/2 inch away from the original lines. Cut along the outside lines, then pin the pattern pieces to a double layer of your fabric. Cut once for the torso and head, and twice for the leg and arm
  • Pin the left arm pieces together, right sides together, and stitch around the outside 1/2 inch away from the edges on your sewing machine. Leave the shoulder edge of the arm open. Do the same to the right arm pieces, then turn both arms right side out. Stuff them with polyester fiberfill, leaving some space at the open edge
  • Stitch and assemble the leg pieces the same way you made the arm pieces. Also stitch the head pieces together, leaving the neck edge open
  • Lay the torso pieces together and mark the openings for the neck edge, armholes and leg holes with a fabric pencil. Stitch around the remaining torso edges, leaving these openings free. Before turning the torso right side out, insert the limb pieces into their respective holes so that the raw edges of the limbs line up with the raw edges of the torso. Stitch these holes closed, encasing the raw edges of the limbs. Turn the torso and limbs right side out through the neckhole
  • Insert the neck of the head into the neck of the torso. Fold the raw edge of the torso neck hole under and hand stitch the neck together with the strong quilter's thread, using a slipstitch to hide the stitching lines
  • Insert the hair into the head. Using a felting needle, lay the hair over the top of the head and press the needle down into it, taking some of the hairs or yarn with it. Pull the needle back out to secure the hair. Insert hair all over the head, moving outward from the crown in a circular pattern
  • Draw the face onto the doll's head, using a pencil. Go over your pencil outlines with a brown pen, then erase the pencil marks. Fill in the color with colored pencil for the softer effects and textile paint for the bolder effects

How to Repair Stuffed Toys:

  • Carefully undress your stuffed doll or animal if it has clothing. Examine the body. Look for worn spots, holes, and ripped seams. Check for "squishiness." There should be enough stuffing for the doll or animal to be huggable without being flat. If necessary, open a seam and add more stuffing. Close the seam using a tapestry needle. A tapestry needle has a blunt tip and larger eye for easy threading with flosses, and is often curved so that it can go into a toy and come back through easily
  • Stitch "in the ditch" to close seams, using "invisible" clear polyester thread. Stitching in the ditch means keeping your stitches on the underside of the two edges as much as possible, then finishing the seam by pulling the thread between the two pieces so that as little of it shows as possible. Check arms and legs to be sure they are still fully attached. If not, use a tapestry needle and thread to reattach them
  • Replace sewn on features by embroidering new ones. Match the original color as closely as possible. Remove old stitching first, then follow the line of the old stitching for the new feature. Use straight stitches to make noses, decreasing the length of each stitch until you have made an inverted triangle for cats, bears and bunnies. Make an oval shape for dog noses. Use an inverted "y" shape to recreate the mouth
  • Replace button eyes only if the toy will not be given to a small child. Eyes can be sewn in an oval or made more circular. Be sure to outline first in black or some other dark color. Fill in with white if desired, then make an iris in the color of your choice. Don't forget to make the pupil area black. Some stuffed dolls, such as Raggedy Ann and Andy had features drawn on with pens. You can also use embroidery paint or fabric paint to make new features
  • If the animal is missing one limb or ear and the other is intact, use the intact piece to make a pattern. Be sure to leave at least a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Match the fabric as closely as possible, or go all the way the other direction by making the new fabric completely different in color
  • To properly cut fake fur, turn fabric fur side down. Use a marker to outline the pattern piece you need to make. Cut the backing, not the fur, keeping the scissors blade as close to the backing as possible. Using a matte knife, instead of scissors, is better for the fur
  • Make new clothes using the old clothes as patterns, or find pattern books from the era your toy was produced. Recreate everything using vintage fabric from thrift stores. Replace snaps and eye hooks. Look through old magazines from your toy's era to find ideas for outfits. Choose styles, colors and trims from the correct era
