How to Tie a Bow Tie:



Tying a bow tie is, admittedly, more difficult than tying a regular necktie. But with practice and a little dexterity, you won't need to rely on a pre-tied bow tie any longer. Learn how to tie a bow tie in just nine steps.

• 1. Adjust the tie's length so it fits your neck size.
• 2. Lift up your collar and put the tie around your neck so the ends hang down in front. One end should hang about one and one-half inches lower than the other.

• 3. Bring the longer end across, behind and over the shorter end, forming a simple knot. Pull the knot snugly around your neck.

• 4. Fold the shorter end where the hourglass shape begins to narrow (the widest point of the shorter end), forming a bow shape. The bow shape should be in front. Hold the bow in a horizontal position at your neck.
• 5. Bring the longer end over and in front of the shorter end.

• 6. Fold the longer end where the hourglass shape begins to narrow, forming a second bow.

• 7. Bring the second bow under the first bow.

• 8. Tuck it into the space behind the first bow.

How to Wash a Bow Tie:

Bow ties have made a real comeback in men's fashion. No longer limited to formal affairs, bow ties are now found in all sorts of colors and patterns. Many are made of durable material that can be cared for at home, without the need to have the tie dry cleaned. Here are some tips on how to keep your bow ties looking crisp and fresh.

• Make sure the bow tie is not made of material that should be dry cleaned only. Look for signs that the tie is made of polyester or other blends that are safe for hand washing.
• Untie the tie. In order to fully clean the material, it must be free of any bunches or knots. The idea is to remove any traces of body oils that may have found their way into the fibers during regular wear.
• Fill the basin or sink with tepid water. Do not use hot water, as this may cause the color to run. Add in a small amount of detergent that is formulated for hand washable items and use your hands to mix in the detergent throughout the water.
• Place the bow tie in the water. Gently move the body of the tie around in the water. Do not rub sections of the material together, as this may damage the shape of the material. Instead, move the tie through the water using a series of up and down movements alternated with back and forth movements. Three to five minutes of this type of action is usually enough to freshen the material.
• Remove the tie from the water. Do not wring out the excess water. Lay the tie out flat on a drying rack made for sweaters, and allow the material to air dry. This will help the material to hold its shape.
• Allow the tie to dry thoroughly before attempting to iron. Make sure to use the heat setting that is intended for the fiber blend. As a precaution, place a thin cotton towel over the surface of the tie, creating a barrier between the material of the tie and the hot surface of the iron. Press gently.
