How to Recycle Energy Saving Light Bulbs:

Energy-saving light bulbs, or compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), use approximately 75 percent less energy than traditional light bulbs and last around 10 times longer. According to EnergyStar.gov, if every household in the United States replaced one traditional incandescent bulb with a CFL, the energy saved could power more than 3 million homes. However, CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, which makes recycling them more difficult

  • Unplug the lamp or turn off the switch for the light. Unscrew the used CFL carefully, once it has cooled, and hold it by the base. Place the bulb where it will not be broken
  • Contact your local recycling company to see if they recycle CFLs. Many recycling companies offer lists of accepted recycled materials on their websites, as do some cities and other municipalities
  • Request a fluorescent bulb recycling kit from your local recycling agency. You will receive packages designed for safely sending used CFLs to recycling facilities, which remove the mercury from the bulb prior to recycling
  • Visit the nonprofit website Earth911.org to view local hardware stores that will accept used CFLs for recycling
  • You can also look at the map on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's website, EPA.org, to view approved recycling centers for CFLs in your area

How Energy Saving Light Bulbs Work:

About Energy Saving Bulbs:

  • To say that a light bulb is energy saving is slightly misleading, since all light bulbs consume some electricity; energy saving light bulbs are simply bulbs which consume less electricity to produce the same amount of light as a standard incandescent bulb. Normal light bulbs are called incandescent bulbs because they produce light using incandescence: the heating of an object to the point where it glows brightly. Since normal light bulbs function using incandescence, a large amount of energy is wasted as heat rather than light. There are two main types of energy saving light bulbs: compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and halogen bulbs

Compact Fluorescent Lamps:

  • Compact fluorescent lamps are a type of light bulb which uses fluorescence as its primary means of creating visible light. Florescence is a type of cold body radiation, meaning CFLs do not require as much heat to work properly. A CFL consists of a glass tube which is coated with a fluorescent material on the inside. Fluorescent materials are able to absorb certain frequencies of light and then glow, emitting new light at a greater wavelength than they absorbed. CFL tubes are filled with a mixture of gases containing trace amounts of mercury which becomes excited and emits ultraviolet light when an electrical current is sent through it. The ultraviolet light is absorbed by the fluorescent coating on the inside of the glass tube, and is converted into visible light which has a longer wavelength than ultraviolet light. The amount of energy needed to excite the gas is far less than the amount of energy needed to heat up the filament in a normal light bulb, and as a result, less energy is lost in the form of heat

Halogen Lamps:

  • Halogen lamps are a type of light bulb which use the same basic principle as incandescent bulbs, but are able to achieve greater energy efficiency by increasing the durability and heat potential of the tungsten filament. When a normal light bulb is turned on the tungsten filament become red hot and trace amounts of the metal evaporate over time, eventually causing the light bulb to burn out. Halogen bulbs employ a chemical recycling process by putting the filament under pressure in a smaller bulb surrounded by inert gases. The gases allow some of the evaporated tungsten to redeposit themselves on the filament, increasing bulb life. Due to this recycling process, halogen bulbs can operate at a much higher temperature than normal bulbs on the same amount of power, which gives them greater light producing efficiency. Due to the extreme heat and compact construction of the bulbs, the bulbs themselves are typically made of quartz, since glass would be less able to withstand the extreme temperatures. Halogen lamps are less energy efficient than CFLs
