How to Build a CD Storage Case?

CDs often come in plastic cases or paper sleeves to protect them from being scratched and the information damaged as a result. But when buying CDs on a spindle, you might find yourself in need of a quick solution for a case. A basic but effective single CD storage envelope can be created by making several folds with a plain piece of paper. There are diagrams available for download from the Internet to help guide your folding, but they aren't necessary. View the resources section to download a picture guide to assist you with these directions.

  • Fold the piece of paper in half by bringing the bottom to the top. Only pinch the sides of the fold, instead of making a full crease across the width of the page. Unfold the paper.
  • Pinch along the top edge of the paper, creating creases to divide the paper into equal fifths.
  • Fold in the edges of the paper (1/5 of each side, as marked by your creases) toward the center. The middle 1/5 width of paper should remain exposed. Crease the length of these folds from top to bottom.
  • Fold the bottom edge to the middle of the paper marked by the creases you created in Step 1. Pull out the side folds from this bottom half so the bottom can be flat against the top half. The sides will now extend out to be wider than the top half fold.
  • Take the side flaps of the bottom fold and wrap them back around the edges of the top half. Crease the folds so the flaps stick behind the rest of the folds. This creates a pocket from the bottom fold to place your CD inside.
  • Fold the top left and right corners inward. Fold down the top and tuck it inside the bottom pocket to enclose the CD.
  • Make another narrow crease along the top edge to use as a spine to label the disc and have it ready to place on a rack. This is optional.

How to Make Your Own CD Storage?

Even in an age where digital music rules the private listening scene, most people still retain a CD collection while some continue to prefer hard formats for digital music. To keep track of your CD collection while keeping all of your discs accessible requires a visible, yet convenient, method of CD storage. Create your own slotted wooden shelf specially designed to store standard CD jewel cases in a place where they'll be secure, readable and easy to grab.

  • Outline the shape of the slat holes in pencil. Each slat should measure 1/2 inch high by 5 5/8 inches wide in order to store a standard jewel case securely while leaving enough room to comfortably insert and remove each case. Space each slat at least a quarter inch from the others and fill the board with outlines of this shape. Leave an inch margin on each of the four sides of the board.
  • Carve out the slats using the router attachment. Set the oscillating power cutter to a low setting (between 3 and 5) and insert the spinning tip into the middle of each slat shape before slowly, but steadily, moving the router around the edges of the outline. Cut the slat 1 1/2 inches deep (you may have to cut in two rounds to achieve this, depending on the length of your router attachment).
  • Cut hanging holes in the top right and left corners of the board using the power drill. Space the holes at least 3/4 of an inch in from the ends of the wood.
  • Sand the wood by hand using sandpaper. Sand inside the slats by folding the paper in half and inserting the folded edge into the slat.
  • Hang the CD shelf on a wall by driving long screws through the hanging holes.
  • Store CDs in the shelf by turning the jewel cases on their sides to insert them into the slats. Position the cases with their spines out so that you can read them.
