How to Choose an RC Airplane Motor: - As electric powered motors continue to gain in popularity with RC airplane enthusiasts, choosing the right motor for your airplane becomes more difficult. With popularity comes variety, and finding the motor that best suits your airplane's size and your flying preferences require that you know the differences in motors and how those differences directly affect the performance of your airplane. Choosing badly can lead to frustrating control issues--often leading to spectacular crashes--while choosing correctly can give you years of flying enjoyment
- Weigh your airplane. Limit your motor choices to those capable of keeping an airplane of your weight aloft and at speed while operating close to the limits of its revolutions per minute. A motor with too little power will burn itself out, while one with too much power will add unnecessary weight to your airplane and make it difficult to maneuver
- Pick a direct drive motor that connects your motor directly to the propeller, or a motor that operates by connecting to a gearbox and then the propeller, in order to reduce the RPMS from the motor. Use a direct drive connection, good for an acrobatic plane or combat flyer, if you're looking for very high propeller speeds. For slower planes that tend to cruise, go with a gearbox connection
- Select the battery that you will use to run your motor. When choosing a motor, you should keep in mind exactly how much power you'll need to keep the motor running. Pick a battery pack rated for use with your motor. The weight and size of the battery can vary though, so examine the compatible batteries for your motor before purchase to determine that the battery can actually fit into your plane
- Select a compatible electric speed control for your brushless motor. Size does not matter in most cases, but make certain the ESC has an amp rating high enough to deal with the peak current that your motor draws
- Purchase and install the motor, battery and ESC
- Test your model airplane in flight. Test it as you would normally fly it to determine if the chosen motor gives you the flight characteristics you desire in your RC airplane
Brushless Motor Advantages:
Low maintenance - Vehicles using brushless motors require significantly less maintenance than their brushed counterparts, according to radio controlled vehicle supplier RC Universe. Brushless motors operate by transferring power from batteries into the engine across brushes, which wear down and need to be replaced. Brushless systems transfer power via electromagnetism, which eliminates the brush friction problem entirely Consequently, brushless motors require far less maintenance and will not need to be replaced as often
Reliability - Brushless motors use an integrated sensor coupled with an electronic speed controller to control commutation. This offers far more precise commutation than is possible with a brushed motor and manual speed controller. Consequently the right amount of torque is applied by the motor, which runs at more a more efficient rate of revolutions per minute than a manual speed control system. Also, there are no brushes coming into contact with the commutator, further increases reliability
Lower resistance - Radio controlled motors have a limited amount of space available to them, as they have to fit inside the vehicles they are powering. Power in RC motors comes down to how much wire is used, and resistance in the circuit. Because a brushless motor does not need to leave space for brushes, thicker wire can be packed into the case; reducing its resistance. Similarly, more turns of wire can be used, which increases the power
Noise - Brushless motors are less noisy than brushed motors in two distinct yet very useful ways. Firstly, the lack of brushes make brushless motors significantly quieter than brushed motors. This allows them to be used in the home or garden without the buzzing annoying family and neighbors. Secondly, brushless motors generate lower levels of radio interference, which improves communications between the remote handset and the vehicle, improving control quality
