The PSP (Playstation Portable) is a portable gaming device that was produced by Sony. It plays special discs called UMDs (Universal Media Disc) and can perform several different tasks, such as playing movies, music, games and can also browse the internet. The PSP gaming system retails for $199.00.

Gaming

• UMD games can be rented or purchased, just like any other video game, and there are many popular games and game series that are available only for the PSP. A UMD is much smaller than a normal disc and fits into the PSP through a "trap door" that opens on the back. The disc is read by a laser as it spins around, and even if you turn the system around or hold it upside down, the disc will not move in its carriage. You can control the games by use of a "thumbstick" that is located on the front of the system and the "circle, X, square and triangle" buttons that are also located on the front. On the top of the system are an L and R button that are used for some games. The PSP control scheme is very similar to the control for the Playstation 3 gaming system. You can also play some games against your friends locally and can even play some games online.

Movies

• Like games, you can purchase special UMD movies to watch on your PSP system. The PSP has a small speaker on the front of it with a volume control that will allow you to hear your movies clearly. If you are in a crowded area but still wish to enjoy a movie, you can plug in a set of "headphones" via the "headphone port" located on the bottom of the PSP. The system runs on batteries, so you can take it anywhere, and if your batteries are running low, you can plug in the "charger" that comes with it. The controls will allow you to pause and play your movies, as well as select some special settings, such as closed captioning and languages (on some movies).

Internet Browsing

• If you don't want to play a game or watch a movie you can browse the Internet with the built in "Internet browsing" feature. This feature allows you to check out certain web pages; you can connect to the Internet by using any wireless hot spot. You can even connect to secure networks, if you know the password, by using the "connection wizard" that is built in to the system. The PSP is not meant to handle web browsing that requires JAVA script or FLASH, however.

Music

• The PSP has a built-in integrated bit of software that allows users to play music. Some music can be downloaded via the web browser, but most music and media can be added to the PSP by way of a USB cord. The USB cord connects your PSP to your personal computer and will allow you to transfer files between the two devices quickly and easily. From there you can play the music directly from your PSP "music library," and the sound will come directly from your speakers. You can also use headphones to listen to music in private.
