Early M40 Rifle Stocks

The M40 is the Marine Corps-designed standard weapon for Marine Corps scout snipers. The weapon was specifically designed for long-range target acquisition, and incorporated a lightweight design with an adjustable optical scope. Over the years of modification, the stock of the rifle has been changed and upgraded for a variety of reasons. The stock structure is an important aspect of rifle design, as the stock creates the base of stability for the rifle

  • Early Stocks: The original M40 rifle was introduced in 1966 for use by snipers of the USMC. The original stock design incorporated both the butt-stock and hand guard in one solid wooden piece. The stock design was based on the framework of the Remington model 700 bolt-action rifle and then slightly modified to accommodate military specifications. Through use in various field operations, specifically in the wet and humid conditions of the jungles of Vietnam, the rifle stock began to warp and deteriorate. This problem rendered the rifle inaccurate over long periods of weathering, and it was eventually replaced by a fiberglass stock in the early 1970s
  • History of the M40: The M40 was designed after the Marine Corps decided that a standard sniper rifle was needed to aid in combat during the Vietnam war. The jungle warfare of Vietnam was so intense at times, that conventional warfare wasn't considered an option. Resorting to guerrilla tactics, involving the deployment of highly trained snipers, was a valuable asset for the troops on the ground. Thus the M40 sniper rifle was designed as a standard weapon for all snipers to use
  • M40 Variations: The U.S. Army also employed the use of a standard sniper rifle after the Marine Corps, also based on the design of the Remington model 700. The M24 utilizes the same principal design, including stock structure, but the difference between the Army and Marine versions of the rifle include the use of long-action cartridges. The M40 is used with the short-action cartridges such as the .308 Winchester and 7.62 NATO, whereas the M24 utilizes full-length cartridges such as the .30-06 Springfield, .338 Lapau and .300 Winchester Magnum.
  • New Stock Designs: After weathering problems and warping were prevalent with the early wooden stocks of the M40, the Marine Corps incorporated an all fiberglass stock known as the McMillan A1. The new stock provided for a lighter weapon to transport, as well as solving the weathering problems associated with the wooden stocks. The all-fiberglass stock also changed the action of the rifle by allowing the barrel to float, and the barrel is only attached to the stock by the action through aluminum pillars. This allowed for improved accuracy when firing the weapon, whereas the original wooden stock design embedded the barrel into the stock completely
  • M40 A3: The most current design of the M40 is the newly designed M40 A5, however, the A3 versions are still primarily in circulation. The A3 design was started in 1996 and entered active service in 2001. The rifle stock was designed around the McMillan Fiberglass A4 tactical stock design. This stock features a bench-rest style, and is cast-molded with an olive drab shade of green for covert operations. The stock also includes a length of pull variant that is adjustable through the spacing incorporated into the stock. The Marines also designed a saddle-style cheek-piece for greater stock-weld when firing the weapon
