How to Photograph a Document:
You can quickly and easily create a permanent archive of paper documents by photographing the documents with a digital camera. Clear, well-lit photographs can even be converted into editable text files using optical character recognition technology. In order to create high-quality photographs of documents you'll need a digital camera, a tripod and at least two artificial light sources in order to ensure that your photographs are precisely taken and readable. Instructions - Set your digital camera on a tripod located above the document. A tripod is important because it ensures that all documents will be photographed at an appropriate, similar angle and distance. Ensure that the tripod is set up such that the camera lens is parallel to the document. Use of a tripod can also help reduce the light required for your photograph since it will help keep the camera completely still.
- Place the document directly underneath your tripod setup.
- Illuminate the document with as much light as possible. Quality of lighting is one of the factors that is most critical to successful document photography. Having sufficient light is important for avoiding dark areas and shadows in the photograph. Natural daylight is an excellent source of lighting, but if you need to use artificial light then use at least two sources to avoid shadowing.
- Focus the camera on the document. Ensure that your camera is well-focused on the document text to produce a clear, readable photograph. Set the optical zoom to your camera's maximum level and adjust the tripod to a suitable distance such that the document fills the entire field of view. Manual focus tends to work best when possible, but if you'd prefer to use your camera's auto-focus option then you may achieve best results with your camera's macro mode.
- Take a picture of your document with your digital camera. Avoid using your camera's flash unless it is necessary for producing enough light. A flash can be problematic when photographing documents, as it can cause the photograph to contain artificial light and dark spots. This is particularly problematic if the document is printed on glossy paper. If you are unable to produce enough light to take the photograph without using your camera's flash then you can reduce the negative effects of flash by zooming out and taking the picture from farther away.
