This slightly abstracted vision of the Pieta you are about to bid on is an original 1990s oil on canvas by the incredibly original, infamously eccentric, and LISTED New York artist and art dealer, Lawrence Salander (1949). Salander, known for his gone-awry business dealings, was genuinely a very talented modern artist.  His own works have sold for impressive amounts in the past and, with all of the media coverage and publicity around his prison sentencing, are sure to continue in the future.

Whether it be in stone, oil, or fragmented glass, the image of the Pieta has been apart of Christianity since its inception. The image of the Virgin Mary cradling Jesus after his crucifixion, is a theme that holds an important place in both religious and artistic sectors alike. Although more often represented in sculpture, the sorrowful Mary and son was originally developed in Germany but made famous by Michelangelo during the Renaissance. Our image of the Pieta is far more modern that its predecessors. Both Mary and Jesus are highly stylized and appear more as one unified form that two distinct images. By depicting mother and son in this manner, the artist creates a triangular form that connotes the church and stability.  A truly unique and calming spiritual piece, this handcrafted piece would be a great addition to any collection. We are most proud to offer it at a stellar eBay price today!

The image is signed and dedicated by the artist on the back of the canvas. It measures 12" x 16" and 13" x 17" in a beautiful custom made gallery frame, provided free of charge to our eBuyers. Condition report: The painting is in great condition. The frame is in great condition as well with minor wear and tear (because the frame is complimentary, we are not responsible for its condition, only that of the artwork).

The artist's work is definitely solid investment. Here is just one of his auction records from www.askart.com:

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Lawrence B. Salander is a former New York City art dealer and an artist. His company, the Salander-O'Reilly Galleries, was cited by the Robb Report in 2003 as the best gallery in the world. By late 2007, Salander had been sued by numerous customers and business partners who claimed that Salander and his company had defrauded them. In November 2007, Salander filed for personal bankruptcy, listing John McEnroe among his creditors. At the time, several artists represented by Salander-O'Reilly also claimed to be owed money. As a result of his bankruptcy, Salander and his wife were ordered to relinquish control of their finances to a trustee. In March, 2009, Salander was charged with 13 counts of first-degree grand larceny, 10 counts of second-degree grand larceny, and other charges. After posting bail of one million dollars, Salander was working in the Phoenix Art LLC Gallery in Millbrook, New York. On March 18, 2010 Lawrence Salander pled guilty to 29 felony counts of grand larceny and was sentenced to six to eighteen years in prison.
