History of the Bulova Accutron

Mass production of the Accutron 214 began in November of 1960 and they were introduced to the public in 1961. During the 17 years that tuning fork watches were made they were the most accurate production timepieces on the Earth, and in space.

In 1960 NASA asks Bulova to incorporate Accutron technology into its equipment for the space program. . During those early years Accutron timing mechanisms were used in 46 US space program missions. An Accutron watch movement sits on the moon's Sea of Tranquility today, in an instrument placed there in 1969 by Apollo 11 astronauts, the first men on the moon.

In 1962 the Accutron 214 becomes the first wristwatch certified for use by railroad personnel. Previously, engineers used pocket watches which had to be frequently calibrated in order to "run the railroads on time".

Accutron wristwatches were given to world leaders as a presidential gift and in 1964 President Lynden Johnson declares Accutron to be the official "Gift of State".

By 1967 Accutron clocks were the only clocks aboard Air Force One and many instrument panel Accutrons were used in military ships and aircraft.

Shipping and handling

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Watches bought by 'Buy it now' between Thursday June 10th and Sunday June 13th, will be shipped on Monday June 14th, due to short vacation. Apologies for the delay.

This watch will be safely packed and shipped using US Postal Service Flat rate box with tracking number.

Expected delivery is normally within 7 days from date of payment. I ship in 24 hours from clearance of funds and send an email with tracking number.

International shipping: Due to regular priority mail packages sometimes being held up at customs, I advise Express shipping. Unlike priority, there is a tracking number and insurance available, and although it is more expensive, it is far more reliable. If you choose regular priority mail, I cannot be held responsible for shipping problems. Thank you.

Please take a moment to see my other listings.
I happily combine shipping to save you money! Up to 3 watches can be shipped for one shipping fee.

My preffered method of payment is PayPal.

Please keep in mind that due to the age of these watches, although I fully stand behind my description, I can't guarantee continued time accuracy and ongoing repair after they leave my shop. I am not a watchmaker, merely a collector. I briefly check the mechanisms and cases for state of repair, and check time accuracy over 24 hours. Photos are considered a part of the description.
