This is a lovely Bouillotte (pronounced BOO-YACHT) Type lamp. The shades and candle holders are tin, the center post iron and the base is weighted tin.
Bouillotte was a French card game that was very popular during the late 1700's. Original Bouillotte lamps were candle lamps that had a bowl shaped base where the game chips were stored. A central tube surrounded by candle holders held a metal shade. The Bouillotte shade could be adjusted downward to cover and shade the burning candles as they burned lower thereby shading the direct candle light from the players eyes. Modern electric Bouillotte lamps often have this adjustable shade feature incorporated into the design for authenticity although it has no practical use. This piece dates to the mid-nineteenth century although the base has been sealed and sand added for weight and the orange paint seems to have been done about the same time (both are believed to have been approximately 35-50 years ago). This remains a charming piece would be a great addition to any collection or as a conversation piece in any office or den.
Overall height is 20 inches, it measures approximately 12 inches across from the outer edges of the shades, 11 inches across from the outer edges of the candle holders and the base is 5 1/2 inches in diameter.
