We are very pleased to be offering these beautiful Forged Iron Ember or Pipe tongs Ca. 1790-1880.  These ember tongs have a fitted piece of iron between the pivot and handles to act as a spring for opening them.  These wonderful ember or pipe tongs were typically used by blacksmiths to remove items from the embers or to adjust embers for better heat.  Ember tongs were also used in the home at the hearth for the same purpose.  During the Civil War, these would have been used to remove molds from the fire where families were making musket balls and other items for the war effort.  These could also have been used to remove the molds of lead children's toys. 

These ember/pipe tongs measure 16 inches in length; 2 1/2 inches in distance from the top of the handle to the bottom handle and 2 7/8 inches at the distance near the end of the tongs.
