"John Thompson, the best known and most prolific producer" of mystical underground comics and posters. Mark Estren, " A History Of Underground Comics" Rolling Stones Press N.Y. 1974

Thompson's poster used on the cover dust jacket and interior color illustrations in eight English and foreign language editions.  John Barnicoat " A Concise History of Posters: 1870-1970" Harry Abrams Art Books, N.Y. 1972

John Thompson is " an extremly persuasive mythmaker...working within the broad mythological lines of "psychedelic" expression, but with a highly personal vision and style which creates mythical worlds in the truest meaning of that term: Systematic, self contained and real...Thompson is a self taught artist whose work as frequently appeared in such publications as the Oracle, The Herald-Express, and the Berkeley Barb...creates powerful symbolic images which have the haunting ambiguity and multiplicity of potential "meanings"...with his generally meticulous, elehant, and clasically controlled technique."  Thomas Albright, San Francisco Chronicle Dec. 4 1968

On Investing in Psychedelic Art; "Material Value: Psychedelic Relics" Esquire, October 1986

"Those nostalgic for the psychedelic revolution usually date the belle epoque of its poster art from 1966 to 1971....As a result, these paper products of a barefoot past are now worth money...you don't want to be paying hard earned lucre for some facsimile; its got to be a true piece...."    In "Psychedelic Sollectibles of the !960s and 70s: An Illustrated Price Guide" 1990 values of Thompsons posters , underground newspaper covers and this dozen published books are given along with his friend Robert Crumb, with whom he collaborated in the Sixties.

"John Thompson is the contemporary American Blake: An artist of such technical versatility and mythic-magic-intuition that leafing through his work is like a guided tour through heaven, hell, and the collective unconscious...."     Robert Anton Wilson from Introduction to " The Book Of Dreams"  Bachner, N.Y. 1977

(Thompson illustrated Wilson's renowned " Cosmic Trigger" 1976, several editions.)

Thompson's work appears in " The Art Of Rock" by Paul Gruskin, Artabras 1987, a thorough study of posters related to musical events of the Fifties, Sixties and Early Seventies. In Oxford University Press' study of culture in Berkeley in the Sixties ("Berkeley At War") Thompson and Goines are referred to as Berkeley's leading poster artists of that era.  In " The History Of The Haight Ashbury" 1980 Thompsom is listed as a leading poster artist in the Sixties S.F. Bay area.
