ART ROSE ROCK FIGURINE DESIGNED BY JOE TIMBERLAKE STINE
The barium sulphate or Barite Rosette, better known as the "Rose Rock", is almost exclusively found in parts of Oklahoma. The rose rock is a combination of barite and sand formed into a shape resembling a fully bloomed rose. These rare and highly colectable objects were formed about 250 million years ago in the Permian Era when ocean waters covered the area. As the oceans slowly withdrew westward a geological formation of reddish sandstone containing the Rose Rocks, locally called the Garber sandstone formation, was left in a small band across the area thus making Oklahoma about the only place in the world where these unusual rocks can be found. Noble, Oklahoma, where I live, is known as the "Rose Rock Capital". We celebrate the Rose Rock, along with our Native American herritage annually with a festival and parade.
Local Indian legend here proclaims that the rosettes were formed by the blood of the braves and the tears of the maidens who walked the "Trail of Tears" to Oklahoma in the 1800's. The legend maintains that each rose rock was formed by a drop of blood or a tear that fell to the ground.
Since I live here, I have access to quite a few excellent specimens but it is rare to find a more beautiful one than those used by our local artist and museum owner, Joe Timberlake Stine. I was given this piece designed by him in 1978. I have had it since then and find it necessary to find it a new home now. I am in hopes that a collector will want to find a place of honor in their home for it. It is about 3 1/2" across and 5 /1/2" high. It is built upon a large beautiful 3" rose rock base with a copper mail box with a tiny bird's nest and eggs inside. It features a hand fashioned sweet little blue bird, a cat tale and a tiny Rose Rock as a flower on a copper stem. There is even a tiny lady bug on the base! This piece will delight any collector or add to the decor of any home. It is indeed a treasure!

I am a widowed, retired, "60's hippie gal" with a collection of Mom's and Grandma's things and a propensity for collecting.
