Armed Madhouse

by Greg Palast (2008, Paper back )

Synopsis
Investigative journalist Greg Palast presents a cornucopia of political exposés that go far in proving that Orwell was right. In his report on the ineptness of the War on Terror, Palast reveals how the Bush family discouraged investigations into the House of Saud and how it hired a private firm, Choice Point, to investigate American citizens. His article on the Iraq War argues that oil was the motivating factor in the invasion, and he reports on the disappearance of $8.8 billion under Ambassador Paul Bremer. An extended piece on how the 2004 election was stolen highlights voter suppression in Ohio and Florida, and predicts similar chicanery in 2008. His report on globalization asserts that the world is not flat, as Thomas Friedman would like to think, but that it is tilted to those with wealth and power, and he shows how corporations are getting stronger while workers' rights are eroding fast. Better known in Great Britain, where he has worked for the Guardian, Palast follows his own nose where it leads him, sifts through mountains of data, and can be pretty acerbic in his write-ups. Many of Palast's stories are unreported in the American media, for which he has few kind words. His previous bestseller THE BEST DEMOCRACY MONEY CAN BUY was a hit among readers on the Left, perhaps because it was bipartisan in its criticism of both Democrats and Republicans. Illustrated.

Publisher's Note
A six-time winner of the Project Censored Award draws on his work as a BBC undercover journalist to discuss such topics as the War on Terror, the Republican agenda for the 2008 election, and media practices that are keeping the Bush Administration's practices from getting reported by the mass media. Reprint.

Industry Reviews
"Palast...is a refreshing, fearless witness to the American political landscape--and he doesn't really care whether or not you like him for it:...At once scary, infuriating, fascinating and frustrating, this book covers almost all the controversial political territory of the new century (see the subtitle), including Hurricane Katrina."
