Chaucer is considered the greatest literary figure of his day (c.1343-1400). His greatest work is The Canterbury Tales, consisting of 24 tales told by a company of pilgrims traveling to Canterbury. The party first assembles at the Tabardan, an inn in Southwark, and there agrees to tell one tale each, both going and returning; the person who tells the best tale is to be treated by the rest to a supper at the Tabard on the homeward journey. The party consists of 29 pilgrims so there should have been 58; but only 23, and a fragment of another, were told. As individual characters the most celebrated are probably the Clerk, Knight, Man of Law, Parson, Squire, and Wife of Bath.
This is an attractive set bound in the original, full, tree calf leather. This would make an excellent gift and/or addition to any collection.
Such early sets are very difficult to obtain.
Each volume will be individually wrapped and padded for shipping.
