A fore-edge painting is a scene painted on the edges of the pages of a book, such that the painting is not visible when the book is closed.
In order to view the painting, the leaves of the book must be fanned, exposing the edges of the pages and thereby the painting.
If you just look at the edge while the book is closed the painting is not visible.
This Fore-edge painting depicts a portrait of Longfellow in the center surrounded on both sides with floral arrangements.

VERY GOOD Condition. The leather is supple and fresh, hinges are strongly attached, there is some light general wear/rubs, some rubs to the fore-edge; no writing or previous signs of ownership. Very well-preserved. Some light minor foxing. This is a beautiful book.
