[Fore-Edge Painting] The VICAR OF WAKEFIELD!! By Oliver Goldsmith. Complete in one-volume.
A fore-edge painting is a scene painted on the edges of the pages of a book, such that the painting is not visible when the book is closed. In order to view the painting, the leaves of the book must be fanned, exposing the edges of the pages and thereby the painting. If you just look at the edge while the book is closed the painting is not visible. This Fore edge depicts a mansion in center, surrounded on either side by floral decorations.
Printed in 1855! This book is over 150 YEARS OLD!!
ILLUSTRATED by John Absolon. ILLUSTRATED with numerous plates protected in tissue. Bound in a full morocco leather binding, of the highest quality! This is a full leather binding! Full leather bindings were much more expensive to produce, and are highly desirable! Thick covers with beveled boards, and embossed framing. Gilded spine, with raised hubs. All edges are cased in gilding! Marbled end papers. Fore edge of mansion in center surrounded on either side by floral decorations. London; Grant and Griffith; Printed 1855. 249 pages. 7.25 inches tall. In excellent condition. Leather is strong and well-preserved. There is some rubbing/abrasion to the spine and extremities, as shown. The hinges are fully and strongly attached, but there is some abrasion, as sown. Small chip at top of spine. No writing or previous signs of ownership but for what appears to be a dealer mark: 'E [18 45' written on blank end paper. Small original retailer shield bookplate with a crown, small scar on the marbled endpaper of pastedown. There is some foxing, but printed on thick quality paper, with wide margins, a pleasure to read. Fore edge is well-preserved.
This would make an excellent gift and/or addition to any fine library. Antiquarian books make a great investment, are only going up in value, and are sure to increase the aura of any room or office!
