Complete in 12-volumes: (Technically this set is complete in 11-volumes with volume 11 being the final volume and containing 'Miscellanies'. However, Volume 12 was printed ten years later in 1893 to add 'The Natural History of Intellect' to this collection; at which time this set was uniformly custom bound by the prestigious Brentanos Bindery in thick moroccan leather.) Volumes one 1 through 11 are all dated 1883, as this is therefore the TRUE FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, unlike other sets that have some volumes dated 1884. Complete in 12-volumes.
VERY GOOD condition. Leather is very strong, supple, and fresh. Printed on exceptionally high quality rag paper with very wide margins. Hinges fully attached and sound, although some are rubbed, as shown. Light general rubbing/wear. Minor signs of usage, some wear along the edges and extremities, as shown. Minor foxing. Early armorial bookplate. No writing or previous signs of ownership.
An immaculate collection. Beautiful binding. Each volume contains an illustrated title page. An extraordinary set of Emerson's complete works bound in quality leather. Quality Emerson sets are difficult to obtain, let alone the Large Paper Edition/TRUE FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. This is a highly desirable and important set and would make an excellent addition to any library. Scarce.
Generally recognized as the major transcendentalist figure in American literature (along with Henry David Thoreau), Emerson (1803-82) was an essayist, poet, orator, philosopher, and abolitionist whose writings and speeches emphasized the importance of accepting the notions of self-examination and self-reliant individualism. His essay entitled "Nature" immediately became known as the Bible of American transcendentalism after its publication in 1836, and a year later, his Phi Beta Kappa address at Harvard, "The American Scholar," was hailed as an intellectual declaration of independence, calling as it did for the "overleaping [of] convention and institution to achieve independent, individual, creative effort."
