London; Printed for and Under the Direction of John Bell; 1788. Complete in 20 volumes.
This is the important Bell's Shakespeare, with the Prefaces by Pope, Theobald, Hanmer, Warburton, and Samuel Johnson; and with both Rowe's and Malone's Life of Shakespeare; and with many other important essays, notes and emendations. Engraved frontispiece portraits of Shakespeare and of the Prince of Wales, of Pope, Warburton, Hanmer and Johnson as well as others, of Shakespeare's house and with a PROFUSION OF FINELY ENGRAVED PLATES throughout the volumes; Indeed, this edition proved a social triumph for Bell with his assembled 1800 subscribers, including the Royal Family (except for the Sovereign) along with the Queen of France, monsieur the Kings brother and a collection of 70 nobles.
This edition was printed on smooth wove paper, and handsomely bound in calf. This edition includes a two volume Prolegomena, which consists of prefaces written for Shakespeare's plays over many years. The PROLEGOMENA TO THE DRAMATICK WRITINGS OF WILL. SHAKSPEARE includes, along with all the most important prefaces, both Rowe's and Malone's 'Lives of Shakespeare', the 1623 preface of Heming and Condell, as well as Shakespeare's Will, Commendatory Verses, and an attempt to determine the original order of the plays.
With 97 portraits, vignettes and character plates, including a foldout of signatures on Shakespeare's Will in Vol. II. This set is Profusely illustrated with copper-plate engravings. 5 3/4 inches tall and 24 inches of shelf space.
This se is in VERY GOOD Near MINT+ Condition!! The leather is very supple and fresh; archivally rebacked, so all hinges are 100% fully attached, and can be opened without risking damage. Quality engravings. Printed on rag paper. About free of any trace of foxing. Very fresh, bright and clean. Early bookplate and name of Charles & Elizth Knight dated 1833. Charles Knight was a famous Shakespeare editor, this could potentially be his signature, I have no way of knowing. These are all tightly bound and try to close when opened. This is a truly gorgeous set of Shakespeare!!
This would make an excellent gift and/or addition to any fine library. Antiquarian books make a great investment, are only going up in value, and are sure to increase the aura of any room or office!
