Sets of Shakespeare from the 1700's are exceptionally difficult to obtain, and are highly desirable!
This is the FIRST EDITION / FIRST PRINTING with Joseph Rann's notes.

Bound in full leather bindings!
Full leather bindings, such as these, were very expensive to produce, and are highly desirable!
Ornately gilded spines, with intricate blindstamp-embossing!
Raised hubs on the spine.
Gilt framing along boards and gilt trimming along edges.
Printed on quality rag paper, and well laid out!
These are large books measuring 9 inches tall!!

This is the First edition; which was published over a period of three years: The first 4 volumes were published by the Clarendon Press and the last 2-volumes by J. Cooke, which is standard for this edition. All volumes have a title page and half-title page except volume 4 (the first by J. Cooke) which appears to have been issued with no title page. There are subscriber notices and erratum indicating where to send payment to receive the next volume, as this set was issued over a period of years.

This set is in excellent condition and fully intact. The leather is supple and fresh. These bindings appear to be from the early 1800's, which makes sense as this set was likely uniformly bound soon after completed. The hinges are all strongly attached but there is abrasion and there is some starting, but all volumes are extra-reinforced by the underlying binding cords. Such early sets of Shakespeare are seldom seen. Fully intact and tightly bound. There is some general usage wear/rubs. Printed on quality rag paper and very fresh. Minimal foxing. There are 2 early bookplates, one armorial bookplate depicting 2 running horses, and an early inscription. This is an exceptionally early set of Shakespeare, from the 1700's. Sets of Shakespeare from the 1700's are exceptionally difficult to obtain, and are highly desirable!

This would make an excellent gift and/or addition to any fine library.
Antiquarian books make a great investment, are only going up in value, and are sure to increase the aura of any room or office!
