Ornate tooling and gilding. All edges cased in gilt. Illustrated with high quality engravings worthy of framing. Elegant STEEL ENGRAVINGS protected in tissue. Includes a biography of Byron. An impressive book. Not dated, circa 1850-1880. During his lifetime, Byron was the most internationally famous poet England had produced, and long after his death continued to be one of the most influential, widely imitated, and widely reviled personalities of his age. Byron's notability rests not only on his writings but also on his life, which featured aristocratic excesses, huge debts, numerous love affairs, and self-imposed exile. He was famously described by Lady Caroline Lamb as "mad, bad and dangerous to know". He travelled to fight against the Ottoman Empire in the Greek War of Independence, for which Greeks revere him as a national hero. He died from a fever contracted while in Messolonghi in Greece.
