It was the pride of the wide open spaces. The power leader in the rice and wheat fields of the nation. The model "R" tractor, rated at 34.27 drawbar horsepower and introduced in 1948, was John Deere's first diesel tractor. Its development involved 66,000 hours of field testing with 16 prototyped tractors.
The cast cutting model for our" had fuel economy that was phenomenal for its time. Farmers appreciated stamina to stay on hard, grueling jobs. It boasted a live power take off, which permitted engaging in disengaging the PTO independently of the forward movement of the tractor. The gasoline, fuel, starting engine used starting, which had always been a bugaboo with diesel engines, especially in cold weather. The all steel cab, available as an extra, was the first available for a John Deere tractor.
