A little about the John Deere DC-3:
The DC-3 was Deere & Company's first large corporate aircraft. Its primary function was to move company personnel between factories, branches, and other business points. The John Deere DC-3 was operated throughout the U.S. and Canada from 1960 through 1964, accumulating approximately one quarter of a million miles of air travel.
First produced in the mid-1930's, the DC-3 immediately became a popular aircraft. According to pilots, "You can crack one up, but you can never wear one out!" Measuring 64 feet long, it had a wingspan of 95 feet and stood 17 feet high. It was said the DC-3 was so easy to handle it could almost fly itself.
Powered originally by a pair of Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp engines, the DC-3 range with maximum fuel load was 1300 nautical miles. Cruising speed was 167 knots at 10,000 feet. Incorporating the snub-nosed prow and sweptback wings, the DC-3's style would characterize most airliners for decades to come. By the 1940's, some 85% of the fleets of all the U.S. domestic airlines consisted of DC-3's. This commercial airliner leadership was not surrendered until the advent of the jet age.
