Gemological Properties- Boulder Opal exhibits the same properties as all opals, however, the opalecense is displayed in seams or areas in dark brown sandstone matrix. Refractive index is around 1.450 but can go as low as 1.42 depending on the type of Opal.  The specific gravity is 2.15 and the hardness is sometimes soft, varying from 5to7.
