Agates are a form of Chalcedony Quartz; they come in various colors and may have banded stripes, variegated sections, and moss like inclusion, wavy lines and any other variation you can think of. There are thousands of named varieties and no two stones are ever exactly alike. They are sold by color and particular type. They may be dyed, polished, carved, and even cut into gemstones. Avoid the dyed varieties, while their inherent properties will not be affected the color association is changed and that can lead to unpredictable results when using the stones for healing or magic.

Agates get their name from the achate river region in Southwestern Sicily. They are found throughout the world and some agate varieties have become known by the name of the region in which they were first discovered (Brazilian, Botswana, etc.) and retain the name even when found elsewhere.
Agates are formed when gas bubbles are trapped in solidifying lava and then become filled with alkali and silica bearing water when coagulates into a gel. The alkali attacks the iron in the surrounding lava and bands of the resulting iron hydroxide are created in the gel which loses moisture and crystallizes leaving the bands intact. Many different forms of agate are known, but all began the same way.
They are polished to bring out the natural color and design, rough agate is dull and not very interesting to look at. Many agates are sliced into slabs and then polished to further enhance their beauty.
