NOTES: FREDERIC PAYET was born on the French Island of Madagascar and reared in Paris, Payet’s early life had surprisingly little to do with art. Up until his late 20s he lived a life not much different than majority of his contemporaries. It wasn’t until his move to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1989, when he joined an uncle at his Buckhead gallery, that Payet had his first contact with art. Having never created a painting before, Payet realized his potential unexpectedly fast, as he sold his first, experimental piece while it casually leaned against a gallery wall, still drying. During the management of restoration of antique paintings at his uncle’s gallery, Payet became acquainted with all the major schools of painting. Inspired by the works of both European and American masters, he experimented with a variety of techniques. Very soon, Payet developed a couple of signature styles: an array of vibrant impressionistic work and playful abstract renditions.

Until this point, Payet’s defining style had been impressionism, a style Payet used as a tool to idyllically encapsulate his perceptions of the world. These, for better or worse, convey the long-lost environments of calm countryside, whether French or North American. Two of his significant characteristics, usually underrepresented in the impressionistic works of other current artists, are the boldness of color choice and the vibrating, life-like movement on the canvas. Draped shamelessly in violets and purples, his landscapes are beyond sensual purity. Yet, the life-like motion emblazoned among the definite application of the palette knife creates vibrancy hard to pass by passively. Payet’s work certainly makes one ponder the famous line from Oscar Wilde: “Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” While observing the foliage movement of Payet’s landscapes, or the trickles of life reflections, spontaneously absorbing the sun-soaked sceneries, one truly wonders if Payet imitates life, or was it life that’s starting to look like art.

For nearly 15 years Payet has emerged as one of Atlanta's premiere artists. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions across the United States: Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Santa Fe, Washington, D.C., Miami and Palm Beach, as well as abroad: Paris and Reunion Island, one of the overseas territories of France. Galleries and art houses in Denver, New Orleans, Dallas, Memphis, Vail and Beaver Creek, Colorado, have also exhibited his work. Though Payet’s current strongest impression on the art scene of the South East’s capital is somewhat curatorial. He runs the Art Space International, a unique 22,000 square foot converted warehouse serving as a community of artists with their studios, private galleries, a wellness center, teaching and events facility. Payet managed to offer a true synergistic getaway for artists and their patrons. His next effort in nourishing the local art scene is the Art Awareness Foundation, a nonprofit start-up committed to benefiting the promotion of art education to Atlanta public schools. Payet defied the common notion of the starving artist not only with his personal success, but he extends it further by providing possibilities for other creative individuals, an achievement leading to potentially earn him the title of an elder in the industry, or - the local art guru.

In color there is life. To understand this power, is living. Color could very well be the most magnificent experience we take for granted. Look around; it's everywhere, surrounding and embracing us. We interpret life as much through color as we do shape, texture and sound. The truth is, the power of color is the very essence of life. “Color and sound possess the power to raise our level of consciousness and bring joy and peace of mind.”
