    1914 P Buffalo Nickel Date Restored – #72
    Price:  $4.00

    Description:

Up for auction is a 1914 Philadelphia

     Buffalo Nickel!

THIS COIN HAS BEEN DATE RESTORED with chemicals.

I've tried to get the best pictures I could.  Take a look at the pictures and use that to judge  the coin yourself.

    WHAT IS CHEMICAL RESTORATION?

The nickel is an amalgam of 75% copper and 25% nickel. The chemicals used to restore the date, the horn and a lot of the other details on the nickel works ONLY upon the 25% of the coin that is nickel. As the chemical comes in contact with the coin, it dissolves away a small percentage of the nickel it comes in contact with.

The reason the date and the horn and other details “emerge” during this process is because, as a percentage, they have a little more copper in them than the surrounding areas. They have more copper because the stamping process forced a higher percentage of the softer copper out of the copper-nickel amalgam and into the incused areas of the die that represented the date, the horn and other details of the coin. The chemical does not work on copper, so the “fields” around these features, which are “nickel rich”, erode faster.

During the process it appears that these features are rising up out of the coin but, in reality, everything on the coin is actually being eroded. The critical features, like the date and the horn, simply don't erode away as fast as the area that surrounds them.

NOTE: the white cloudy areas are a relection off the cellophane holder the coin is in, it's NOT on the coin itself.

HISTORY OF THE BUFFALO HEAD NICKEL:

The popular Indian Head, or Buffalo, 5-cent coin (nickel) was introduced in 1913. Designed by James Earle Fraser, a student of legendary sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the Indian Head/Buffalo nickel design showcases the native beauty of the American West.

The Native American depiction on the coins obverse is believed to be based on three different American Indians. Two of the American Indians who modeled for Fraser as he sculpted the coin were named by the designer before his death. They were known as Chief Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux and Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne. Although many have claimed to have had a sitting with Fraser for this design, he could not recall the name of the third person and satisfactory documentation has not yet been found to identify that individual. It is widely believed that the bison on the coins reverse was modeled after Black Diamond, a popular attraction at the New York Zoological Gardens.

I try to honestly describe everything I sell, but please view the pictures and grade for yourself. No warranties are expressed or implied in my opinion of the grades.  Grading is an art, not a science. Several subjective factors of personal preference may be considered different by others. These include color, toning, strike, blemishes, and overall eye appeal.  Each Bidder's own examination of the item is most important and not the grade represented by another.
