Up for auction is a 1943 Philadelphia Wheat Penny!
According to the guidelines of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) grading scale, I feel this coin would grade as an F-12 FINE but appears to have been cleaned. Listed criteria for an F-12 are:
"Some details show in the hair. Cheek and jaw are worn nearly smooth. The ear and bow are visible. Most details are visible in the stalks. Top wheat lines are worn but separated."
Condition of this coin: The features of this coin meet the above criteria, but it appears this coin was cleaned at some point. The reverse shows some uneven discoloration and a couple spots.
I've tried to get the best pictures I could. Take a look at the pictures and use that to rate the coin yourself.
HISTORY OF THE 1943 LINCOLN PENNY:
For 1943, the US Mint suspended use of copper in the manufacture of coins to preserve this precious metal for use in making ammunition for WWII. They substituted zinc coated steel during the critical war year of 1943. These coins became commonly known as “steelies”.
Designed by Victor D Brenner, this cent was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. The designers initials (V.D.B.) appear on the reverse of a limited number of 1909. The initials were restored in 1918 to the obverse side of Lincoln's shoulder. The Lincoln penny was the first coin to bear the inscription “In God We Trust”
This auction starts at just $.99 and there will be NO RESERVE.
I try to honestly describe everything I sell, but please view the pictures and grade for yourself. No warranties are expressed or implied in my opinion of the grades. Grading is an art, not a science. Several subjective factors of personal preference may be considered different by others. These include color, toning, strike, blemishes, and overall eye appeal. Each Bidder's own examination of the item is most important and not the grade represented by another.
