Graceful Blade against Gold-Brown Wood
This is a highest-quality 5/8 swaybacked blade made in Germany in the early-mid 1900s for the Bostwick-Braun Company of Toledo, Ohio. Originally set in standard synthetic scales, the value and beauty of this razor has been raised by a set of Desert Ironwood scales, custom designed by Doug Marcotte of Tucson. The blade is glossy and nearly pristine, with just a few tiny pinprick-sized pits that may be left over from the original casting, since I found no rust on this blade and there are no shadows from corrosion. The tang stamps
are clear and easy to read.
The gracefully curved
and beveled diamond-point scales have iridescent gold ripples that show up nicely under a low-sheen finish of lemon oil, and are fastened with pewter-finished stainless collars and polished copper pins for a striking birdseye look. The pivot is tight, the blade holds itself open under gravity and the scales don't wobble during stropping; the blade closes in the center without bite. I can't identify any hone wear, and I taped the spine when putting a super-keen edge on it so I wouldn't add any wear. This shaving ensemble fits pleasingly in the hand and would make both a great addition to a shaving rotation or a good starter razor for someone who doesn't want to risk owning a low-quality razor. And at barely over $100, it's about as low as I'll be offering for a Marcotte-handled razor, and a good deal for someone who is attracted to straight-razor shaving for its blend of class and masculinity.
Truly Shave-Ready
I like my razors to
look good, but I only shave with a straight-edge and
I restore these for the purpose of giving people a flawless shaving
tool. The edge has been carefully honed on both sides of a DMT Duosharp
and a Norton water hone, lapped on balsa blocks with
two grades of fine diamond grit and chrome oxide, then
finished off with 60 strops on smooth saddle leather. The result is the
only
standard I accept: an edge that will cut a hanging hair at multiple
points and deliver the smoothest, closest possible shave. With
daily use and
proper stropping and this razor shouldn't need to be any time honed
soon. After sharpness-testing it's has been rubbed down with a
silicone-impregnated cloth to give it a glossy moisture barrier.
Satisfaction Guaranteed
I take pride in my
work and will refund any customer who isn't satisfied with their razor,
including the cost of return shipping.
Free Shaving Soap
I also make and sell premium, heavily-scented shaving creams and
soaps. With this razor you'll get a free
four-ounce cup of my luxury soap made enriched with extra glycerin and
special ingredients for a long-lasting, moisturizing lather. This is
home-made soap which I sell for $6 per cake.
Other Shaving Products
I also sell
hand-crafted shaving cream with the same luxurious ingredients as my
soap, but with the scent-releasing properties of creams and with lanolin
to be extra kind to the skin.
In addition
to more great shavers, my other listing include beautiful
3-inch-wide deluxe razor strops made from heaviest saddle leather and
hardware. Check out Marcotte table strops, 18 inches long, made of
beautiful bloodwood mounted with thick, smooth strips of heavy-grain
saddle leather.
Razor honing and restoration
I also offer a razor-sharpening and
-polishing service starting at $20, and I can have Marcotte custom
replacement scales installed on your razor at varying prices. Doug
Marcotte's scales are made of carefully selected finest hardwoods and
each set of scales is made to fit a particular blade with minimum space
between blade and spacer, and with friction washers to help keep the
heel of the blade dry, free of unnecessary wear and with even tension on
the blade at every angle. Washers are flat or domed, in brass or
stainless steel, and pins are in brass, nickel or copper.
