Elegant Steel and Wood

Hawesco was one of a multitude of small-shop razor makers that thrived in Solingen, Germany in the early-to-mid 1900s, and this unusual blade profile is made more memorable by a set of Marcotte custom bloodwood scales fastened with copper pins. This German blade actually has a "French Point" shape, softened by a slightly rounded tip on a bowed edge that is a dream to hone. This is one of the easiest blades to sharpen that I've handled. A full hollow-grind, the thin-tapered, perfectly straight blade sings when plucked and gives a pleasing ring as it's honed or stropped. It's a generous 6/8 wide, but has a compact feel from its raked-back look and from being about a quarter inch shorter than most full-size blades.

This is handsome and unique enough to make a fine collector's piece, but it's also one of the better shavers I've come across. The smiling blade glides comfortably across the cheek and is easy to maneuver around the tighter nooks and angles of the face.

Truly Shave-Ready

I like my razors to look good, but I only shave with a straight-edge and I restore these for the purpose of giving people a flawless shaving tool. The edge has been carefully honed on both sides of a DMT Duosharp and a Norton water hone, lapped on balsa blocks with two grades of fine diamond grit and chrome oxide, then finished off with 60 strops on smooth saddle leather. The result is the only standard I accept: an edge that will cut a hanging hair at multiple points and deliver the smoothest, closest possible shave. With daily use and proper stropping and this razor shouldn't need to be any time honed soon. After sharpness-testing it's has been rubbed down with a silicone-impregnated cloth to give it a glossy moisture barrier.

I also offer a razor-sharpening and -polishing service starting at $20, and I can have Marcotte custom replacement scales installed on your razor at varying prices. Doug Marcotte's scales are made of carefully selected finest hardwoods and each set of scales is made to fit a particular blade with minimum space between blade and spacer, and with friction washers to help keep the heel of the blade dry, free of unnecessary wear and with even tension on the blade at every angle.
