Graceful Blade against Gold-Brown Wood

This round-point Hibbard-Spencer, German-made blade is just a whisker under 5/8 wide, closer to that than 9/16. Made in the early 1900s, with shining smooth jimps cut into the top and bottom of the tang and with clear maker's marks stamped into both sides, this is a beautiful mirror-finished blade.

The profile of the tropical  hardwood is the unique Shamrock Shaving "boat." This isn't an undersized razor, but it has a compact look and feel because the slender Purple Heart scales hug the blade close. Like all of Doug Marcotte's scales, these are custom designed, and there's just a tiny but adequate distance between the blade's toe and the lignum vitae spacer. Everything about this razor is tough, tight and classy. The scales are fastened with polished copper pins Doug makes himself; he even spent time painstakingly doming the stainless steel collars and burnishing them to look like pewter. Turn this razor in your hand and you'll see the light glisten iridescently in the wood beneath a subtle lemon-oil finish.

This is another good starter razor because of its size and shape, though many starters are looking for something cheap. I can't say there aren't bargains on eBay, but if you're starting out as a straight-edge shaver, you definitely want something shave ready. I guarantee satisfaction, and that includes my promise of a smooth shave out of the box.

Experienced shavers might like this blade even more than a beginner, because they'll know enough about inferior scales and badly honed blades to understand this is a great ensemble of steel, fittings and wood.

Truly Shave-Ready

I like my razors to look good, but I only shave with a straight-edge and I restore these for the purpose of giving people a flawless shaving tool. The edge has been carefully honed on both sides of a DMT Duosharp and a Norton water hone, lapped on balsa blocks with two grades of fine diamond grit and chrome oxide, then finished with 60 strops on smooth saddle leather. The result is the only standard I accept: an edge that will cut a hanging hair at multiple points and deliver the smoothest, closest possible shave. With daily use and proper stropping and this razor shouldn't need to be any time honed soon. After sharpness-testing it's has been rubbed down with a silicone-impregnated cloth to give it a glossy moisture barrier.

Doug Marcotte's scales are made of carefully selected finest hardwoods and each set of scales is made to fit a particular blade with minimum space between blade and spacer, and with friction washers to help keep the heel of the blade dry, free of unnecessary wear and with even tension on the blade at every angle. Washers are flat or domed, in brass or stainless steel, and pins are in brass, nickel or copper.
