Best Deal On a Beautiful Razor

This 11/16 round-point straight razor was made in Germany in the early 1900s for the Yankee Cutlery Co. About a century later it came to my home, sad, rusted and with no scales to clothe its nakedness. I spent careful hours sanding out the tarnish and polishing it mirror-bright, then sent it to my friend Doug Marcotte in Tucson, where he dressed it in sharp-looking Black Cocobolo scales. Outfitted with pewter-toned collars and shining copper pins, it now sits proudly among my lineup of ready-to-sell razors.

This razor is actually more handsome and valuable than it would have been new, not just because the blade is a collector's item but because Doug didn't pick these scales out of a bin of one-size-for-all's. The tip of the blade closes just 1/16 of an inch from the carefully fit spacer, and the tropical hardwood hugs every dimension of the blade. Too, this one is shave-tested, guaranteed ready to go out of the package, unlike the way this would have originally been delivered.

The copper pivot is tight and the blade won't flop about during honing or shaving. It closes snug and centered. Internal washers protect its finish and help it not collect water between the scales.

I'm offering this razor at a lower price, not because it is a deficient shaver in any possible way, but because there are a few shallow marks in the blade's hollow that you can see when you hold it close. The blade shines brightly all over, but there is some visible evidence of the elements that worked on this razor as it sat unused during untold decades. However, that lack of use has also preserved the width of the blade from being ground off over time; built a bit larger than the standard 5/8-width, this blade has only moderate honing wear and is still 11/16 wide.

Truly Shave-Ready

I like my razors to look good, but I only shave with a straight-edge and I restore these for the purpose of giving people a flawless shaving tool. The edge has been carefully honed on both sides of a DMT Duosharp and a Norton water hone, lapped on balsa blocks with two grades of fine diamond grit and chrome oxide, then finished with 60 strops on smooth saddle leather. The result is the only standard I accept: an edge that will cut a hanging hair at multiple points and deliver the smoothest, closest possible shave. With daily use and proper stropping and this razor shouldn't need to be any time honed soon. After sharpness-testing it's has been rubbed down with a silicone-impregnated cloth to give it a glossy moisture barrier.

Satisfaction Guaranteed

I take pride in my work and will refund any customer who isn't satisfied with their razor, including the cost of return shipping.

Free Shaving Soap

I also make and sell premium, heavily-scented shaving creams and soaps. With this razor you'll get a free four-ounce cup of my luxury soap made enriched with extra glycerin and special ingredients for a long-lasting, moisturizing lather. This is home-made soap which I sell for $6 per cake.

Other Shaving Products

I also sell hand-crafted shaving cream with the same luxurious ingredients as my soap, but with the scent-releasing properties of creams and with lanolin to be extra kind to the skin.

In addition to more great shavers, my other listing include beautiful 3-inch-wide deluxe razor strops made from heaviest saddle leather and hardware. Check out Marcotte table strops, 18 inches long, made of beautiful bloodwood mounted with thick, smooth strips of heavy-grain saddle leather.

Razor honing and restoration

I also offer a razor-sharpening and -polishing service starting at $20, and I can have Marcotte custom replacement scales installed on your razor at varying prices. Doug Marcotte's scales are made of carefully selected finest hardwoods and each set of scales is made to fit a particular blade with minimum space between blade and spacer, and with friction washers to help keep the heel of the blade dry, free of unnecessary wear and with even tension on the blade at every angle. Washers are flat or domed, in brass or stainless steel, and pins are in brass, nickel or copper.
