Eye-Catching Color

This Red Imp is as stylish in the 21st Century as it was decades ago, with its bright red scales etched with a dancing devil, its red-enameled tang stamp and its bright blue stippled storage box with green labels. If you're new to straight-edge shaving this razor is likely a lot older than you are -- but manages to be an old-school with a rebellious, trendy look.

The square-point blade is just a shade under 6/8 broad, definitely wider than 11/16.  The steel is well preserved, with a glossy finish and original enamel in the tang stamp. The markings are deep and clear on both sides of the tang. The scales are tough and sound, with no cracks, chips or unusual wear marks except for a small ding under the pivot on the front. Look for it, it's hardly visible even when you know it's there. The blade comes to rest on a third pin, and close centered with no wobble or bite. The box is in perfect condition and the paper labels are still legible and colorful. The two parts of the plastic box seal tight and it takes a good tug to get them apart.

Truly Shave-Ready

I like my razors to look good, but I only shave with a straight-edge and I restore these for the purpose of giving people a flawless shaving tool. The edge has been carefully honed on both sides of a DMT Duosharp and a Norton water hone, lapped on balsa blocks with two grades of fine diamond grit and chrome oxide, then finished off with 60 strops on smooth saddle leather. The result is the only standard I accept: an edge that will cut a hanging hair at multiple points and deliver the smoothest, closest possible shave. With daily use and proper stropping and this razor shouldn't need to be any time honed soon. After sharpness-testing it's has been rubbed down with a silicone-impregnated cloth to give it a glossy moisture barrier.

Doug Marcotte's scales are made of carefully selected finest hardwoods and each set of scales is made to fit a particular blade with minimum space between blade and spacer, and with friction washers to help keep the heel of the blade dry, free of unnecessary wear and with even tension on the blade at every angle.
