Being presented for sale is this Victorian Eastlake Walnut & Burl Walnut Sewing Stand Work Table with fitted interior circa 1880. This sweet sewing stand measures 28 3/4 inches in height,25 inches in width, 17 inches in depth and weighs approximately 30 lbs. Incised and geometric carvings accent this lovely Eastlake stand.This is a charming accent piece that would surely add a special touch to most any room.This 19th century sewing stand was made by and marked: Herts & Co., NY": The Herts Brothers were prominent interior and furniture designers from New York City. Their business, run by Isaac H. Herts and his brother, Benjamin H. Herts, furnished major buildings in New York City including the New York Produce Exchange, the Columbia Bank, the Union Square Bank; hotels such as the Knickerbocker, Hotel St. Regis, and the Woodward and Murray Hill Hotel; social clubs such as the Criterion, Progress, and Colonial; and, the yachts of William Astor and other important clients. The Herts Brothers were also involved with exhibitions at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia and the 1893 Columbia Exposition in Chicago. Today, some of their furniture can be found at various museums across the United States, and some surface at auctions. This sewing stand offers a lift up top with a mirror inside, we believe to be the original mirror which does show some silver loss and spotting as age appropriate and measures 19 3/4 inches wide by 12 inches high. Opening the burl walnut top reveals divided compartments with the makers stamp inside. This stand is raised up on carved X legs, with double stretchers with the bottom one also having sawtooth carvings. This piece has its original finish which does show wear in some areas mainly on the beveled edge of the top of the lid.
