Title: Corte de Cana (Cutting the Sugar Cane) [A very typical scene in the Brazilian Northeast where Sugar Cane has been one of the main crops of the region since the 1500s.]
Description: It is an original woodcut or wood block print signed and dated in pencil by the artist Givanildo in the bottom right. It is a traditional regional work of Folk Art that is typical in style and subject matter of the region depicting the farmers, ranchers and other inhabitants of the Sertanejo (the dry interior backlands of Northeast Brazil). The print is made by first drawing the subject in reverse on a block of wood, then the areas to be left white are carefully carved away leaving a relief on which ink or pigment is applied and then pressed onto a sheet of paper, usually by running it through a press, to create the print as seen above. The print is being sold as a single sheet that is not matted nor framed. The page is actually much larger than shown in the pic, so there is plenty of margin all around. A Great Accent for the Home!
Size: The image area measures10 by 11 inches (25x27cm) and is on a 13 x 19" (33x48cm) sheet with a very wide margin all around as seen in the pics.
Condition: It is a recently made new print in Excellent condition printed on a large sheet with ample margin all around. Typical of Folk Art and the woodcut process, there may be a spot or two of stray pigment or light printing, but generally the artist has done a very skillful job in creating a beautiful print. The pic is very good though and you should be able to see any flaws of this nature. Overall, it is a very nice print on a strong bright sheet.
