Description: It is an authentic antique map approximately 148 years old with original hand coloring. It is an old hanging wall map that once rolled up on rods, although the rods are no longer present and it has been attached to a stretched canvas. The map is drawn and engraved by J.M. Atwood in New York as stated in small print just above the population cartouche in the lower right.It was published in New York by Horace Thayer & Co as stated on the map. It has a date of 1852 printed in the top center title block flanking the words United States and has a copyright date in fine print along the bottom of 1847. It is a rare map to find, since most of these have deteriorated due to being rolled and stored causing much cracking, primarily due to the shellac finish that at the time was ironically used to preserve them. The shellac can be removed by a professional restorer to reveal a brighter colored map underneith, although many perfer the original darkened appearance. We have stablized it on a sturdy canvas that is very frameable as is and would make a nice accent to a study or other room.
Size: The map, edge to edge of paper, measures 30 x 42 inches inches and is mounted on a stretched canvas measuring 36 by 48 inches.
Condition: The pics pretty well show the condition. Disregard the light glare, the overall aging is fairly even throughout. There is some light dampstaining that blends in well with the ageing, typical cracking on the surface and some areas of paper loss in the corners, small holes along the top and bottom where it was attached to rods. It is basically as seen, so take a good look at the pics and let us know if you have any further questions. The map is actually originally backed with linen that shows through in a few places as seen. We have attached to canvas with water soluable archival glue (acid free PVA), so it can be carefully removed by a restorer if further restoration is desired. It certainly has a classic rich antique patina that many desire and a real museum quality to it.

Shipping: Free UPS Shipping or if within a 100 miles or so, we will personally deliver it. Please allow a couple of extra days for shipping due to the large size and need for special packing. International shipping will be at actual cost and probably very expensive, if interested we can give you an approximate quote or you can look on the UPS site or another carrier if desired.
